Teachers know kids need daily writing practice, but it's impossible to give feedback to dozens of kids at once. Written feedback takes forever, and it often ends up balled up at the bottom of backpacks. Students dread writing because there's nothing more daunting than a blank page (even for adults!). And when they do get started, it's so easy to get stuck, lose momentum, and ultimately give up. So we asked ourselves: 1. What if every teacher had a fleet of skilled tutors who could sit with each student and provide personal, encouraging feedback as they write? 2. What if every student had confidence to write because the process of drafting and revision felt like a fun, motivating game instead of a chore? The answer to both of those questions was WriteOn!

Teachers deserve great tools

A lot of educational software misses the mark. It’s clunky, unintuitive, and too often built without a real understanding of what teachers and students actually need.

We're raising the bar because education matters too much for teachers to be stuck with outdated, poorly designed tools.

Writing is central to thinking

Writing isn’t just a way to show what we know—it’s also how we figure out what we think. When students write, they’re organizing ideas, testing understanding, and making sense of the world.

That’s why frequent writing practice matters. It builds clearer thinking, deeper learning, and skills students carry far beyond the classroom.

Learning should be fun

Learning works best when students are genuinely engaged. Curiosity, play, and a clear sense of progress help students stay motivated and willing to work through challenges.

When learning feels rewarding, students practice more, take risks, and build confidence. That is how real growth happens.

AI can be used responsibly

AI is a powerful tool, and how it is used matters. In education, it should support learning without replacing the work of thinking and writing.

When designed thoughtfully, AI can help students practice and improve over time. We believe in being transparent, keeping teachers in control, and making sure students stay actively involved in their learning.

💻 Product

We make it very easy to quickly create assignments that align with your curriculum. You can do this in two ways when creating a new assignment: 1. Select "Create with AI" and explain what you're working on in this unit. Use "add instructions" to give additional context on your curriculum. 2. Select the "Create manually" option when creating an assignment, and just paste in your pre-existing prompt/instructions. With both of these options, you may also add reading material so our AI coach has the same context as your students. We are actively working on content-sharing between teachers so that if teachers at your school are using a shared curriculum, you don't need to reinvent the wheel every time you make a new assignment. Stay tuned!

AI feedback tools like Writable might seem similar on the surface, but WriteOn is different in some key ways: 1. IMMEDIATE: Writable gives feedback after the student has completed their draft, but WriteOn gives feedback as they write, when it is most useful. 2. FOCUSED: Writable gives an overwhelming amount of feedback all at once. WriteOn gives one actionable piece of feedback at a time, ensuring students know exactly what they can do right now to improve their draft. 3. SCAFFOLDED: Writable doesn't help students with drafting, only revising. WriteOn allows you to optionally break down your assignments into steps, so students can be guided through the process of writing. 4. FUN: Writable is dry and boring. WriteOn is fun and engaging due to our built-in game mechanics: students earn stars for the progress they make on each step. 5. INTUITIVE: Writable's interface is cluttered and confusing, and many students spend more time trying to figure out how to use it than they do on writing. WriteOn has been designed to be easy to use for all students, even those with little computer experience.

Although WriteOn uses AI models to provide feedback, we are very distinct from standard AI products like ChatGPT: 1. SOCRATIC: ChatGPT gives answers, but WriteOn offers questions. It doesn't do the work for students - it prompts them to do their own thinking. 2. UNDISTRACTING: The last thing you want when a student is writing is for them to be distracted by a back and forth conversation with a chatty robot. The only way students can interact with our AI coach is to ask for feedback on their writing, and they are always given just one piece of feedback at a time. 3. PEDAGOGICAL: ChatGPT tries to be all things to all people, but WriteOn is custom-designed to provide helpful tutoring to kids. We've baked in many best practices of excellent writing instruction.

🤖 AI

On the whole, yes. The data centers that power AI are resource-hungry, and have an undeniable impact on our environment. Thankfully, the way we use AI is extremely minor compared to most of its other uses. Instead of a chatbot that constantly uses resources, we limit our use of AI to each time a student requests feedback. Think of WriteOn like a school bus or a textbook. They each have environmental impacts, but the relatively minor cost is worth it to educate our children. That said, we are concerned about the impact of AI as a whole, and will look for ways we can reduce our footprint whenever possible.

Unfortunately, most AI tools do. But at WriteOn, we’re working to do just the opposite. A typical AI chatbot tries to be generally helpful, which usually means doing work for the user. But we customized Starby, our AI coach, to do the opposite. Starby starts by asking questions instead of giving answers, encouraging students to do the thinking for themselves. If students get stuck, Starby may offer a sentence stem or an example (like a good tutor would), but it doesn't just write the student's answer for them.

No, our goal is the opposite: to empower teachers by giving them great tools that free them up to do what no machine can do. We are working on this because we believe that teachers are underpaid, overworked heroes. It is one of the most important jobs in our society, and that's even more true now that we've entered the age of AI. We need kids to have a human connection with their teachers more than ever. Our hope is that WriteOn can take care of much of the low-hanging fruit of feedback, so that when kids raise their hands, you know that your time with them will be well spent.
